Irony or Inconveient Truth

Former Vice-President, and almost President, Albert Gore, is making his way to Washington today to address global warming.

This will happen in the midst of a tremendous and deadly ice/snow winter storm.

Is global warming a real threat? I don't know, and neither do scientists and meteorologists.

Is walking/driving on ice a real threat? Just watch the news.

Thanks Mr Gore for bringing this to our attention.

United Around Obama

Some things to keep in mind . . .

- about 65 million Americans voted for Obama for President; that works out to about 22% of the US population
- about 60 million Americans voted for someone else besides Obama for President
- about 100 million eligible voters in the US were so inspired that they didn't even care enough to go the polls on election day

A country united around one individual?

May we be careful not to fall for the cult of personality (created in large part by the media in this case) -- in any sphere of life. May we keep our heads about us, when everyone else seems to be losing theirs.

May we remember our principles. May we "seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness."

United around Obama? Careful.

2009 Predictions

DISCLAIMER: As i type this I am battling the flu, not very clear thinking.

Looking back over last years 1/1 post I find that only 1 of my predictions came to be . . . the Boston Celtics won the NBA championship. Another prediction, the Florida would win the national championship in football remains to be seen . . . they are playing in the game in a few days . . . but hey, at least they got there.

Here goes . . .

1. Though we may never hear it, Obama will say quietly to himself "Why did I ever want this job?" What, with the problems that confront us and the big-time egos in his cabinet. He's in for it (and I'm afraid we are too). Earnestly, may we pray for the president and for our nation.

2. At the 2009 Oscars, Heath Ledger will win an award. (I know, that's really stepping out on a limb.)

3. The financial turmoil will continue throughout the year. Businesses will fail. But I also predict that this downturn will make us a stronger nation, and we will rise stronger. I don't just mean financially stronger, but I think we will be really ripe for a great spiritual awakening.

4. UNC will win the national championship in men's basketball.

5. To be crowned in 2010, Texas will win the national championship in football.

6. The Indianapolis Colts will win the Super Bowl.

7. The New York Yankees will win the World Series.

8. Carl Edwards will win the NASCAR championship.

9. The Boston Celtics will repeat as NBA Champions.

10. Hollywood will turn "The Last Lecture" into a movie.
